Who are we?

The Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia Limited (AHCSA) is the peak body representing Aboriginal community-controlled health in South Australia at state and national levels.

Our primary role is to be the ‘health voice’ for all Aboriginal people in South Australia. We achieve this by advocating for the community and supporting workers through our Member Services with appropriate Aboriginal health programs based on a holistic perspective of health.

About the role

2 year fixed term contract | 1.0 FTE |

The Work Health and Safety Officer supports the implementation and maintenance of effective WHS systems that contribute to a safe, culturally respectful and compliant workplace.

This position plays a key role in ensuring AHCSA meets its statutory obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act and promotes a culture of safety and wellbeing through risk management, governance, reporting and training.

The role requires strong technical knowledge of WHS legislation and compliance standards, alongside an understanding of cultural and psychological safety within Aboriginal community-controlled settings.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the implementation and continuous improvement of AHCSA’s Work Health and Safety (WHS) systems

• Coordinate and support the WHS Committee and governance framework

• Develop, review and maintain WHS policies and procedures in line with legislation and ISO 45001 standards

• Conduct workplace risk assessments, inspections and internal audits

• Manage incident reporting, investigations and corrective actions

• Maintain WHS registers, compliance records and mandatory training monitoring

• Prepare WHS reports and contribute to organisational risk and compliance reporting

• Support Return-to-Work processes and liaise with relevant internal and external stakeholders

• Promote psychological and cultural safety across the workplace

• Provide operational WHS administration support and ensure confidentiality of WHS information

Essential Experience

• A minimum of a Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is essential

• Demonstrated experience in a Work Health and Safety role

• Strong knowledge of WHS legislation and compliance requirements

• Experience conducting risk assessments and managing WHS reporting processes

• Understanding of cultural safety principles in Aboriginal community contexts

Special Conditions

• National Police Check and Working with Children Check required

• Out-of-hours work may be required
